Shirley Ransom-Muhammad was born in Marianna, Arkansas on February 7, 1958, to Rachael Johnson and David Ransom. Her mother passed when she was five years old. Her father raised her in West Helena, Arkansas. When she was eighteen, she enrolled and attended college until she became pregnant with her oldest daughter. In 1979, she relocated to Kansas City, Missouri with her aunt and other family members.
She continued to raise her children until she began her career in the transportation industry, in 1992. She held her first position with the Jackson County School District as a school bus operator with Vanguard transportation company. Nearly five years later, she acquired a position with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA). She remained with the company for twenty-four years.
Shirley was preceded in death by her daughters, Tasheika Baker and Azalea Gordan, her mother, Rachael Johnson, father, David Ransom, and sister, Fannie Mae Ransom.
She leaves to cherish with everloving memories her seven children Monique S. Ransom, Quiana R. Martin (Manning), Rahman M. Muhammad, Theotis A. Muhammad, Kevin J. Muhammad, Omar T. Muhammad, and Tyler J. Ransom. Seven grandchildren Hartasia T. Baker, Dominique T. Baker, Leonta J. Baker, Octavia I. Douglas, Alea S. Douglas, Michael J. Martin Jr., and Quion R. Martin. Four sisters Erma L. Hill, Larcenia Craig, Bernice Green, and Debra Davenport. Six brothers Eddie Ransom, David Ransom Jr., Theotis Ransom, Augusto Davenport, John Eaton, and Herman Eaton.
