Obituary for Mr. Shawn Walker Shawn Walker pic1

December 14, 2020

Mr. Shawn Jarvas Walker was born in Detroit, Michigan on June 13, 1971. He was the first born son to Patricia Diane Walker- Hudgens and Eddie Lee Lindsey, both preceded him in death. At the early age Shawn expressed his phenomenal athletic strengths in all sports, as he was a natural born athlete, a true all-star. Shawn matriculated within the school system through junior high and excelled academically. He completed his high school studies at Park Hill Senior High in Kansas City, Missouri where he continued to show off his amazing skills. He was a member of the basketball, baseball, and football teams, showing strides in his physical capabilities.

Shawn was extremely social and the life of the party. He was well-known for his ability to master the hippest dance moves. Hitting his moves as he entered the door, “skoal” ready, he never truly needed a dance floor, the music made him lose control. He made friends in all atmospheres and participated in various educational programs. During his senior year, he was awarded a full academic scholarship to Iowa State University in which he accepted and attended in Fall 1989. His Number 6, cornerback for The Cyclones, earned him the nickname “Hammer”! Shawn was a beast on the field. Like the name he earned, he could lay a lick on opponents that they would remember. He entertained the world each Saturday across television screens. Shawn was intelligent and creative, but it was sports that he was most attracted to and took the lead in his college career. One of the proudest moments for the family was in 1995 when Shawn earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications!

Shawn relocated to Dallas, Texas and worked in hospitality for the corporate office of Marriott hotels. He continued his passion for sports and was the guru of athlete’s stats and team’s progressions amongst family and friends. Traveling back to Missouri shortly after, Shawn spent time with peers and family and decided to take residence and call Kansas City his home. He was an employee of City Union Mission where his social skills lead him to new acquaintances and close colleagues. Shawn had an amazing spirit and sense of humor and was loved by all.

Shawn accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. He attended many different churches in his later life through City Union Mission. Always knowing that his adoptive father, Uncle Ray, who was a second father to him, could guide him with any spiritual needs. It was under the roof of Uncle Ray and Auntie Bettie, and within their prayers that Shawn was afforded an additional chance at life’s successes and was forever grateful for such opportunities.

Shawn departed his life on Monday, December 14, 2020. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Robert and Johnanna Lindsey, maternal grandparents, Joseph Walker Sr. and Sarah Hawkins, his parents Patricia Diane Hudgens, Eddie Lee Lindsey and Bettie Gene Verner. He leaves to cherish his memory: Father, Pastor E.R. Verner, his only son Tre Walker; his siblings, Samuel Washington, Jr. (Marlene), Twanya (Roderick), Shawan, Dawn, Edward Ray Jr., Tamesha, Norman “Jay” Jr., and Jarmard; special uncle Anthony Walker and cousin, Howard Abron III; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
