Mr. Charles Crayton Baker Sr., age 83 of KCMO entered his peaceful rest to join his beloved wife Joyce Johnston Baker in glory on Saturday Nov. 28 2020 at the VA Medical Center.
He was born on September 23, 1937 in Anderson, South Carolina to the union of Ernest and Clara Baker. Charles was the 1st of their four children.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Clara Baker, daughter Katina Renee Baker, wives Ruth, Dorthy, Joyce, siblings; Betty, JT and Patricia.
Charles Baker Sr. was educated by the Anderson, SC School District where he received his high school diploma.
He entered the workforce until he enlisted into the United States Army in 1958. He served from 1958 to 1979 in which time he was able to continue his education to become a highly respected Army Medic which ultimately landed him in the JET Magazine for a heroic action in the Vietnam War of 1966 to 1967.
Charles made a career in the army and retired in 1979 at Fort Benning in 1980. He went on to be ordained as a Baptist minister in Tucumcari, NM in 1985. Where he met his 3rd wife Joyce they relocated to Kansas City, Missouri where Charles began to working again for the VA in the psych ward. He again made a career and entered into his second retirement in 2005.
He suffered the loss of his loving wife of 21 years in 2007 after caring for her during her long illness.
Because of his love of travel Charles obtained his CDL certification and took every chance to “Burn Up That Highway” he could, until his health started failing and his traveling was halted.
Although human, Charles was the best husband, father, father in law, grandpa and brother we could have got.
But mostly a devout man of God! Never raising his voice but could command a room. He eluded courage, class and positive motivation. He will sorely missed by us all.
He leaves to cherish his memories: daughter Angelea Baker Billings (James) Albuquerque, NM, son Charles Crayton Baker Jr. (Janine Johnson) of KCMO, three grandchildren Tenysha Billings, Jasmine (Peter) Billings and James Billings II all of Albuquerque, NM and 1 great granddaughter he adored Ms. Layla Lopez of Albuquerque, NM.
